For centuries, even millennia, long hair had been a symbol of prestige and power. Whether you were Aphrodite, Empress Elizabeth of Austria or Princess Koshi of Japan, long hair reigned. It represented beauty and youth, today it represents freaking patience.
If I got a dollar every time a client asked me why her hair doesn't grow, I would be able to afford a time machine where I could ask Aphrodite herself.
So while Elon is busy finding ways to take us to Mars, instead of taking us back in time, I’ve figured out how to grow and care for your long locks, without the need of an ancient greek goddess. I will however clarify that, for me, olive oil really is the food of our Gods.
My name is Angela and I’ve been in the hair industry for pretty much my whole life. My mom is a hairdresser and well, the apple fell very close to the tree. Growing up I spent most days at my mom's shop. It's where I did my homework, where I went before soccer practice and after school. It's where I learned the most about life. My mom didn't think I was listening, but I heard every conversation, every story and every secret.
My mom has a way of captivating her clients, she always has the wildest stories, the best advice and the raw truth. And though I possess all those qualities, I think the greatest thing I ever inherited from her is my genuine care for people, especially the women who sit in my chair.
Throughout my career, long and healthy hair has always been my specialty. For me, there's nothing more rewarding than a client who finally has the hair length she was never able to attain. While I can guide you on how to grow it and treat it, Wednesdays 'N Weekend’s Twirl has you covered in the caring and styling department.
Growing it:
Eat well, don't stress. Hair is an extension of your skin, it grows from within. The healthier your insides = the healthier your outsides.
Cut it. While Aphrodite might be a myth, cutting your hair surely is NOT. If you want long hair, you will need to cut it every 2-3 months so that you prevent it from breaking. Once it breaks it will get shorter. The trick is to cut less than what grew from your last trim, this way it still gets long. If your hair is damaged you will need to cut off the affected part first and then fall into your 2-3 month routine.
Treat it:
Invest in the products you put in your hair. Using 1 to 2 professional products can change your whole perspective. A good shampoo and conditioner is the start you need.
Pro tip: Kerastase.ca has an answer for every hair type, their whole line protects colored hair. Take their quiz or ask a professional which product is right for you, it's worth the investment.
Your scalp is as important as your hair. Massage it, cleanse it and treat it, it will improve the quality of your hair and help with the extra inches.
Use a detangling spray. Hair is at its weakest when wet so brushing your hair like a savage is not recommended.
Care for it:
Hot tools can really be a killer. A blowdryer, a curling iron or a straightener can damage your hair more than bleach. You do not need to set your irons at 450°, and for the love of hair, use thermal protection.
TWIRL THE SH*T OUT OF YOUR HAIR. This is literally my favorite way to assure minimal damage and maximum care. I tie my hair in the Twirl and secure it into a bun. Not only does it prevent damage when I sleep it gives me the perfect soft wave when I wake up.
Twirl while you’re in the sun. You may like to tan, but your hair prefers the shade. The sun will burn your hair just as it will burn your skin. Using the Twirl while under the sun is a huge life hack. It will protect from the UV’s and also keep it smelling nice since pollution will have a harder time penetrating through the eucalyptus material. Because of its absorption properties it will also keep your hair dry and soft.
Style it:
Whether you use the Twirl as a styling tool or as an accessory, it definitely won't fall short (pun intended). Here are some tips for using it as a styling tool (this means leaving it in your hair for a certain amount of time to mimic a wave or style you would usually get from a hot tool)
Pro tip #1: If your hair is damp you will get a better curl.
Pro tip #2: If you have 2 Twirls, tie them at the bottom of your ears like two low pigtails and perform the bun look on both sides. Twirl each bun respectively away from your face so that both sides look cohesive. I promise you will never use a curling iron again. (results are better with damp hair and a styling lotion)
Pro tip #3: The higher the bun the higher the volume, the lower the bun the sleeker the result.
Pro tip #4: If you want a more tousled wave, braid the Twirl in your hair and remove it in the morning.
Pro tip #5: For a voluminous blow-dry look, untangle your hair and tie the Twirl in a high bun.
So while travel is still up for debate, I know one thing for sure; If you eat well, don’t stress and use your Twirl, you won’t need a 5 star resort to get long luscious beach waves. I highly suggest starting on Wednesdays. Come to think of it, Weekends too!
